Major Infrastructure Works at Sembawang (Contract 1)

The project involved major infrastructure works to support the upcoming developments in Sembawang, including new roads, road widening works, trunk sewers, utility specific ducts, and enhancement and realignment of the existing drainage infrastructure along the Sembawang River. It is the first-of-its-kind for HDB to adopt utility specific ducts in brownfield residential areas that optimises the underground space for utilities, and aims to minimise disruption to road users in the long run.

The innovative engineering solutions include:

• Integrated U-Drain and cantilever slab design, enabling reinstatement of the Park Connector Network (PCN) without additional land take while accommodating existing and proposed services.

• Concealed services crossing at Sembawang River, allowing utilities to cross the 26-metre-wide canal without the need for unsightly surface structures, enhancing aesthetics and user experience.

• Developed a coordinated 4-cell box culvert and U-Drain solution which addresses maintenance access and ownership requirements by multiple stakeholders.

• Concealed roadside drains for Utility Specific Ducts (USDs), eliminating the need for surface ramps and creating a smoother, more accessible environment for pedestrian and cyclists.
